How to transport a mattress

Are you moving to another home and need to transport a mattress? Looking for information, how to safely do it by yourself? Or maybe you would like to know how much does it cost to hire a transport provider? In this article you’ll find all the needed info!

*
Choosing the best way to transport a mattress obviously depends on its type and dimensions. Two of the most common mattress types are: spring mattresses and foam mattresses. Contrary to popular belief, neither of these types should be folded during transportation! There are some slight differences in how the mattress may be transported depending on their type – it will be mentioned in paragraphs below.

*
When you are buying mattress, the store can deliver it right to your door (for additional fee, of course). But what if you are moving to a new home and need to somehow transport your mattress there? Or if you need to send the mattress abroad? In both cases the store’s help is not an option – fortunately there are other ways of safe and convenient transport.

Preparing a mattress for transportation

*
The most popular mattresses dimensions:
– 35 x 79 in.
– 63 x 79 in.
– 79 x 79 in.

*
The mattresses thickness ranges between 7 and 12 in., weight – 26–68 lbs. Preparing a mattress for transportation usually doesn’t pose any problems. Just wrap it in painter foil and secure the edges with some duct tape. Despite their light weight, mattresses are inconvenient to move (because of their considerable size) – make sure that you have someone to help you carry it.

Please, note
Some of the websites point out the roof of the car as one of the methods of transporting a mattress. We highly recommend against it – this method is the most harmful way to ship a mattress (due to the weather conditions and the rush of air).

*
If you plan to transport a mattress on your own, the crucial thing you need is a car with enough space. Bigger mattresses (63 x 79 in., 79 x 79 in.) are certainly too big to be transported in most car booths (with the exception of pickups). An estate car might be enough to transport 35 x 79 in. mattress, though.

*
The most important thing in mattresses transportation is to ship them without bending. If you’ve bought a mattress during the last couple of years, you must have noticed that most of the stores roll them up and pack them in foil tubes. It’s certainly easier to transport a mattress in a form of a tube, but even the producers advise against attempting it at home as it can reduce the mattress’ life span.

*
If you plan to transport a foam mattress, there is one thing you can try to make it a bit smaller and therefore easier to transport. Obtain a vacuum storage bag big enough to fit your mattress – compressing won’t decrease all of the mattress’ dimensions, but will take a couple of inches off its thickness. It will allow you to fit the mattress in the car booth more comfortably.

*
But what if you don’t have a car big enough to fit a mattress? Or for some other reason you are unable to transport it by yourself? Then it’s time to hire a professional.

*

*
