If you want to dispatch the caravan on your own, make sure that your driving licence enables you to do it.

You are entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer of a total mass not exceeding 8,250kg.

You can drive a vehicle up to 3,500 kg and tow a trailer of a mass not greater than 750kg

If you want to transport a caravan whose mass exceeds the one you are entitled to tow, you will have to pass an additional driving test. Weight of most caravans exceeds 750kg!

Transporting a caravan on your own is not always possible. Sometimes a caravan is no longer capable of travelling very long distances, or you do not have enough time to go all the way to deliver it. In these cases you can hire a company that will take the burden off you and deal with the transportation.  They usually tow or use a car carrier to do it.

Things to do before hiring a transport company:

  • Make sure that you know the exact size of the caravan (weight, height, width, length)
  • Decide which type of transportation would be the most suitable for you
  • Ensure that your caravan has an up-to-date insurance
  • Inform the hauler about the condition of the caravan – its brakes, lights and tyres

– When towing a caravan, you need to take into consideration that the vehicle combination weigh much more that just a car. Hence, braking and accelerating will take more time than it would normally do.

– Adjust your driving to the length of your vehicle- take corners more widely than normal.

– Comply with the speed limits that are different for a car with a trailer than for a car without it

– Place heavy items in the centre of the caravan – it will guarantee greater stability to the caravan

– Do not carry any passengers in the caravan when you are towing it

Dimensions of a caravan

You may not know the exact dimensions of your caravan, but it is important to get at least some approximate measurements. The dimensions are usually within these ranges:

  • Length: from 19’6” to 25’3”
  • Width: around 7’7”
  • Weight: from 1100kg to 1590kg

What most people don’t realize when considering to transport a caravan themselves is that it costs more than what it seems. Especially over a long distance. Consider the time you need to take off work to transport it, the wear and tear involved, costs of fuel, costs in meal breaks and overnight accommodation all add up.
