Tips for preparing for transportation

Furniture transportation

If you are moving to a new house or sprucing your place up by adding some new items it is likely you’ll look for furniture shipping at some point. Regardless of whether we’re talking about furniture you already posses or recently bought furniture straight from shop, furniture shipping is always quite problematic. Of course it depends on what kind of furniture needs transportation – chairs as well as night tables could be transported in your car, but a bookcase or a kitchen table could become an issue. If you have a van at your disposal, you may attempt to ship the cargo on your own, but if you don’t, you’ll need help from a hauler. If you are searching for a trustworthy solution that will also be affordable, consider trying a transport marketplace, like Clicktrans.

Preparing furniture for transportation

When planning to transport your furniture, there are rules you have to follow, when it comes to preparing them for transportation. Firstly, don’t forget to remove all the contents from the furniture – even if things inside are few. Jolts and shocks are inevitable during transportation and every extra item moving freely inside your furniture may damage it. Also empty furniture will be lighter and therefore easier to move.

Dismantle what you can – if your furniture may be dismantled without damage and shipped in pieces, that’s the best way to transport it. A bed in pieces is also more simple to fit inside of a van. The main downside of such a solution is that it takes some time and skill, as unskilfully disassembled furniture might be difficult or even impossible to reassemble after transportation. Also – it’s good to be very cautious when shipping tiny pieces (screws etc.). It’s safer to ship them separately, e.g. in a Ziploc bag.

There is furniture (especially antiques) that mustn’t be dismantled and have to be shipped in one piece. What’s the best way to transport them safely? Chance that you will find a box big enough to fit an armchair is not high, but you can still secure it for the shipping. When preparing furniture for the time of transportation bubble foil will be of significant value. Wrap all the fragile elements and all the corners in bubble foil to save your cargo from breaking if anything bumps into it on the road. If you have no bubble foil, you can try using cardboard to protect the corners.

When you’re transporting furniture with some especially fragile parts (for example containing glass or delicate fabrics) you have to be especially careful while transporting it. When you can, it’s best to transport them separately, wrapped in thick layer of cloth and bubble wrap (every glass element should be shipped like that). If it cannot be dismantled, enclose it in additional layers of bubble foil. And remember to mention to the transport provider that he’s transporting delicate cargo.

Like we’ve mentioned before, usually you will need assistance with shipping furniture. When searching for a hauler it’s smart to determine if he offers assistance with loading and unloading. Don’t forget to mention from which floor they should be taken and to which floor they should be moved – and if there is an elevator the haulers can use.
