Tips for preparing for transportation

Furniture transportation

If you are moving to your new house or changing the decor it’s possible you’ll look for furniture shipping at some point. Regardless of whether it’s furniture you already posses or recently bought furniture straight from shop, furniture shipping is always quite problematic. Naturally the kind of furniture in need of shipment matters – shelves and bedside tables might be transported inside your car, but a bookcase or a kitchen table might be problematic to ship. When you posses a van, you may attempt to transport the cargo yourself, but in most cases you’ll need help from a hauler. If you are searching for a reliable solution that won’t cost a fortune, consider trying a transport marketplace, like Clicktrans.

Preparing furniture for transportation

When planning to move your furniture, there are rules you ought to follow, when it comes to preparing them for transportation. First of all, don’t forget to remove all the contents from the furniture – even if things inside are few. Some jolts as well as vibrations are almost impossible to avoid on the road and every extra item roaming freely within your furniture may damage it. Also empty furniture will be easier to ship.

Disassemble every part that you can – if your furniture can be dismantled without damage and shipped in parts, that’s the best way to ship it. A bed in parts is also more simple to fit in a van. The major disadvantage of shipping furniture in pieces is that the disassembling can be time-consuming, as wrongly disassembled furniture might be hard or downright impossible to put back together in your new home. Also – you must be extra cautious when shipping small parts (screws etc.). It’s safer to transport them together, for example in a Ziploc bag.

Some types of furniture (for example antiques) mustn’t be dismantled and have to be shipped in one piece. What’s the best way to ship them safely? Chance that you will find a box big enough to fit a dinner table is not high, however there are other ways to secure it for the time of transportation. While preparing furniture for the time of shipment bubble wrap is essential. Enclose all the fragile parts and all the corners in bubble wrap to prevent your cargo from breaking in case anything crashes into it during transportation. If you have no bubble foil, you can try using cardboard to secure the corners.

If your furniture has some exceptionally fragile parts (for example made of glass) you must take extra care while transporting it. When you can, it’s best to transport them independently, wrapped in protective layers of cloth or bubble wrap (every glass element should be transported like that). If it cannot be dismantled, enclose it in additional layers of bubble wrap. Don’t forget to inform the hauler that he will be shipping delicate cargo.

Like we’ve mentioned before, most of the time you will need help with transporting furniture. When searching for a hauler it’s smart to find out whether he offers help with loading and unloading. Remember to specify from which floor they should be taken and to which floor they should be moved – and if there is an elevator the haulers can use.
