Tips for preparing for transportation

Furniture transportation

If you are in the process of moving to your new house or redecorating your place it is likely you’ll need furniture transportation. Regardless of whether we’re talking about furniture you already posses or recently bought furniture straight from shop, furniture transportation is usually a challenge. Naturally it depends on what kind of furniture needs transportation – chairs and bedside tables might be transported inside your car, however a wardrobe or a kitchen table could become an issue. If you posses a van, you may attempt to transport the load on your own, but if you don’t, you will require assistance from a hauler. If you are searching for a trustworthy service with a reasonable price, try using a transport marketplace, for example Clicktrans.

Preparing furniture for transportation

When you need to transport your furniture, there are rules you ought to follow, while preparing them for transportation. Firstly, remember to empty all the furniture – even if things inside seem few. Jolts and shocks are almost impossible to avoid on the road and every extra item roaming freely inside your furniture might damage it. Not to mention that empty furniture will be lighter and therefore easier to ship.

Disassemble what you can – if your furniture may be safely disassembled and shipped in pieces, that’s the best way to ship it. A bookcase in parts is also much easier to fit inside of a van. The main disadvantage of shipping furniture in pieces is that it takes some time and skill, as wrongly dismantled furniture might be hard or even impossible to put back together after transportation. Other than that – you must be very cautious when shipping small parts (screws etc.). It’s best to ship them separately, for example in a Ziploc bag.

There is furniture (especially antiques) that cannot be disassembled and must be transported as a whole. How to ship them securely? Chance that you will find a box big enough to fit an armchair is rather small, but you can still secure your cargo for the time of transportation. When securing furniture for the time of transportation bubble wrap is of significant value. Wrap all the delicate elements and every corner in bubble wrap to save your load from breaking in case some other load bumps into it during shipment. If you cannot acquire bubble foil, you can try using cardboard to secure the corners.

If your furniture has some extra delicate parts (for example made of glass) you must be especially careful while transporting it. When you can, you should ship them independently, enclosed in protective layers of cloth and bubble wrap (every glass element should be transported that way). If it’s a part of furniture that cannot be dismantled, wrap it in additional layers of bubble wrap. And remember to inform the hauler that he will be shipping delicate load.

Like we’ve mentioned before, usually you will need assistance with transporting furniture. When choosing a transport provider it’s smart to find out if he offers assistance with loading and unloading. Remember to specify the floor they should be taken from and the floor they must be transported to – and if there is an elevator available.
