Tips for preparing for transportation

Furniture transportation

If you are moving to your new house or changing the decor there is a good chance you’ll look for furniture shipping at some point. Whether it’s your old furniture on removal or recently bought furniture straight from shop, furniture shipping is usually quite problematic. Of course it depends on what kind of furniture needs transportation for example chairs as well as night tables might fit inside regular car, however a bookcase or a kitchen table might be problematic to ship. When you posses a van, you can ship the furniture on your own, but in most cases you’ll need assistance from a hauler. In search for a trustworthy solution that won’t cost a fortune, try using a transport marketplace, for example Clicktrans.

Securing furniture for shipment

When you plan to move your furniture, there are rules you should follow, while securing them for shipment. First of all, don’t forget to empty all the furniture – even if the items inside seem few. Some jolts as well as vibrations are almost impossible to avoid during transportation and all of the items roaming freely within your furniture might become a potential danger. Not to mention that furniture without any content will be lighter and therefore easier to load.

Dismantle what you can – if your furniture can be dismantled without damage and transported in parts, it will be the safest way to ship it. A bookcase in pieces will also be more simple to place in a van. The major disadvantage of shipping furniture in pieces is that the disassembling can be time-consuming, as improperly disassembled furniture can be difficult or downright impossible to put back together in your new home. Also – you must be very cautious when shipping small parts (like pins or screws). It’s best to ship them separately, for example in a Ziploc bag.

Some types of furniture (for example antiques) cannot be dismantled and have to be transported as a whole. How to ship them securely? The possibility that you have a box suitable to fit an armchair is not high, but you can still secure it for the shipping. When preparing furniture for the time of shipment bubble foil is of significant value. Wrap all the delicate parts and all the corners in bubble foil to save your load from damaging in case anything crashes into it during shipment. If you don’t have bubble wrap, you may also use cardboard to secure the corners.

If your furniture has some particularly delicate parts (like made of glass) you must be especially careful during shipment. When you can, you should ship them independently, enclosed in protective layers of cloth and bubble wrap (all glass shelves should be shipped that way). If it’s a part of furniture that can’t be disassembled, wrap it in extra layers of bubble wrap. Don’t forget to mention to the transport provider that he’s shipping fragile load.

Like we’ve mentioned before, most of the time you will need help with shipping furniture. While searching for a transport provider it’s convenient to determine whether he offers help with loading and unloading. Remember to specify from which floor they should be taken and to which floor they should be moved – and if there is an elevator available.
