Tips for preparing for transportation

Furniture transportation

If you are moving to your new house or sprucing your place up by adding some new items it’s possible you’ll need furniture transportation. Whether it’s furniture you already posses or brand new furniture, furniture transportation is usually quite problematic. Of course the kind of furniture in need of shipment matters – shelves and bedside tables might be transported inside your car, but a bookcase or a dinner table could be problematic to ship. If you have a van at your disposal, you can ship the cargo yourself, however in most cases you’ll need assistance from a transport provider. If you are searching for a trustworthy service with a reasonable price, try using a transport marketplace, for example Clicktrans.

Securing furniture for transportation

When planning to move your furniture, there are a couple of steps you should follow, while preparing them for transportation. First of all, remember to empty all the furniture – even if the items inside are few. Jolts as well as shocks are almost impossible to avoid on the road and every extra item roaming uncontrollably inside your furniture may become a potential danger. Also furniture without any content will be lighter and therefore easier to move.

Disassemble what you can – if your furniture may be dismantled without damage and transported in pieces, it will be the safest way to ship it. A table in parts will also be much easier to place in a van. The major downside of such a solution is that it takes some time and skill, as unskilfully dismantled furniture can be difficult or even impossible to put back together in your new home. Also – it’s good to be extra cautious with all the really small pieces (like pins or screws). It’s safer to ship them separately, for example in a Ziploc bag.

Some types of furniture (for example antiques) mustn’t be dismantled and have to be transported as a whole. What’s the best way to ship them securely? The possibility that you have a box big enough to fit an armchair is not high, but you can still secure your cargo for the time of transportation. While preparing furniture for shipment bubble foil is essential. Wrap all the delicate places as well as every corner with bubble foil to prevent your cargo from breaking in case some other load crashes into it during shipment. If you cannot acquire bubble wrap, you may also use cardboard to secure the corners.

If your furniture has some particularly delicate elements (for example containing glass or delicate fabrics) you should be especially careful while transporting it. When you can, it’s best to transport them independently, wrapped in protective layers of cloth or bubble wrap (all glass shelves should be transported like that). If it’s a part of furniture that can’t be disassembled, wrap it in extra layers of bubble foil. Don’t forget to mention to the hauler that he will be transporting fragile cargo.

As was mentioned above, most of the time you will need help with shipping furniture. When looking for a transport provider it’s good to find out if he offers assistance with loading and unloading. Don’t forget to mention the floor they should be taken from and the floor they must be transported to – as we
