Tips for preparing for transportation

Furniture transportation

If you are in the process of moving to a new home or redecorating your place there is a good chance you’ll look for furniture shipping at some point. Whether we’re talking about furniture you already posses or recently bought furniture straight from shop, furniture shipping is always a challenge. Naturally it depends on what kind of furniture needs transportation for example chairs as well as bedside tables could be transported inside your car, but a wardrobe or a dinner table could become an issue. If you posses a van, you may attempt to ship the load yourself, however if you don’t, you will require assistance from a hauler. If you are searching for a reliable service that won’t cost a fortune, consider trying a transport marketplace, like Clicktrans.

Securing furniture for shipment

When planning to transport your furniture, there are a couple of steps you might like to follow, when it comes to securing them for shipment. Firstly, don’t forget to remove all the contents from the furniture – even if the items inside seem few. Jolts as well as vibrations are inevitable during transportation and every extra item moving freely inside your furniture may damage it. Also empty furniture will be lighter and therefore easier to load.

Disassemble what you can – if your furniture may be dismantled without damage and shipped in pieces, it will be the safest way to ship it. A bed in parts will also be more simple to fit inside of a van. The main downside of shipping furniture in pieces is that the disassembling can be time-consuming, as improperly disassembled furniture might be difficult or downright impossible to reassemble in your new home. Also – it’s good to be very cautious when shipping all the really small pieces (like pins or screws). It’s best to ship them separately, e.g. in a Ziploc bag.

There is furniture (especially antiques) that mustn’t be dismantled and must be shipped in one piece. How to transport them securely? The possibility that you have a cardboard big enough to fit an armchair is not high, however there are other ways to secure your cargo for the shipping. While preparing furniture for the time of transportation bubble wrap is essential. Wrap all the fragile elements and every corner with bubble wrap to prevent your cargo from damaging if anything bumps into it on the road. If you cannot acquire bubble wrap, you can try using cardboard to protect the corners.

If your furniture has some exceptionally delicate elements (for example containing glass or delicate fabrics) you must take extra care during shipment. When you can, it’s best to ship them independently, enclosed in thick layer of cloth and bubble wrap (all glass shelves should be transported like that). If it can’t be dismantled, enclose it in extra layers of bubble wrap. And remember to mention to the hauler that he’s shipping delicate load.

Like we’ve mentioned before, most of the time you will require help with transporting furniture. While choosing a hauler it’s good to find out if he offers help with loading and unloading. Remember to specify the floor they should be taken from and the floor they must be transported to – and if there is an elevator available.
