Tips for preparing for transportation

Furniture transportation

If you are moving to a new house or redecorating your place there is a good chance you’ll look for furniture shipping at some point. Whether we’re talking about furniture you already posses or recently bought furniture straight from shop, furniture shipping is usually quite problematic. Of course it depends on what kind of furniture needs transportation – chairs and night tables could fit in your car, however a wardrobe or a kitchen table will likely be problematic to ship. When you have a van at your disposal, you can transport the furniture yourself, but in most cases you’ll need help from a hauler. If you are searching for a reliable solution that will also be affordable, try using a transport marketplace, like Clicktrans.

Preparing furniture for transportation

When you need to move your furniture, there are rules you might like to follow, while preparing them for shipment. Firstly, remember to remove all the contents from the furniture – even if the items inside are light. Jolts and shocks are almost impossible to avoid on the road and every extra item roaming freely inside your furniture might damage it. Also empty furniture will be easier to move.

Disassemble every part that you can – if your furniture may be dismantled without damage and transported in parts, that’s the best way to transport it. A table in pieces is also much easier to place inside of a van. The main downside of shipping furniture in pieces is that the disassembling can be time-consuming, as unskilfully dismantled furniture might be difficult or downright impossible to put back together in your new home. Also – you must be very cautious with all the really small pieces (like pins or screws). It’s best to transport them together, e.g. in a Ziploc bag.

There is furniture (especially antiques) that mustn’t be disassembled and must be shipped in one piece. How to transport them securely? Chance that you have a box big enough to fit a dinner table is not high, but there are other ways to secure it for the time of transportation. While securing furniture for the time of shipment bubble foil will be of significant value. Wrap all the delicate places and every corner with bubble foil to prevent your load from damaging if anything bumps into it during transportation. If you don’t have bubble foil, you can try using cardboard to secure the corners.

If your furniture has some exceptionally delicate parts (like containing glass or delicate fabrics) you should be especially careful while transporting it. When you can, it’s best to transport them independently, wrapped in thick layer of cloth or bubble wrap (every glass element should be shipped like that). If it’s a part of furniture that can’t be disassembled, wrap it in additional layers of bubble wrap. Don’t forget to mention to the hauler that he will be transporting delicate load.

Like we’ve mentioned before, usually you will require assistance with shipping furniture. While looking for a transport provider it’s smart to find out if he offers assistance with loading as well as unloading. Remember to specify from which floor they should be taken and to which floor they should be moved – and if there is an elevator ava
