Art transportation

Art transportation can be tricky and have to be planned precisely before first arrangements are made. For one, every field of art (in some cases every piece) needs different ways of preparing for transportation. The art category is very varied, you can find there a wide array of things from paintings or engravings to sculptures, art installations and much more.

Art is usually very breakable and therefore is prone to damages. What’s more many art pieces are atypical in shape and dimensions, therefore transporting it via post office often not an option. Finaly art is an expensive load, which makes it very important to find a trustworthy transport provider and the best way of preparing the art for shipping. That excludes post office as well as most couriers – companies where you cannot work out the details of the transportation with the person who will be directly responsible for shipping your load.

Art is considered to be delicate cargo. You have to remember to place ”fragile” tag on the box, to make sure that the hauler know to be especially careful while shipping it. While preparing an art piece for shipment there is a problem of packing the cargo. When you buy something from a store you get a package which in the future you can use to for transportation (for example that goes for household appliances). However with art you don’t have any original box – you have to take care of it on your own.

What is the best way to secure art for transportation? It varies depending on what piece of art you wish to transport. When it comes to sculptures and pottery the most important thing is to choose a cardboard that could fit it. The cardbard cannot be much bigger than the load – any empty space left between the box and the art may lead to damaging the cargo during transportation. If the shipped art piece have any removable elements, make sure to transport them separately. Wrap the whole piece in bubble wrap and gently put it in the box. If there is any space left between the load and the cardboard, fill it with more bubble wrap or Styrofoam. Remember to place a ”delicate” sign on the top and on the side of the cardboard.

Preparing a painting for shipment will look a little different. There are special boxes for painting transportation – with such box your painting will be safe during transportation – just remember to fill the space that is left in the box with some cloths or Styrofoam to cushion any vibrations during shipment. In case you don’t have such box, you can ship a painting without a box, enclosed in bubble foil or stretch foil. Just don’t forget that the bubble foil and stretch foil shouldn’t come into contact with the painted side of the cargo. To avoid that enclose the cargo in some soft material (some cotton fabric like a bed sheet) prior to enclosing it in bubble wrap.

As for putting the load in a shipping vehicle, a painting must be shipped upward. With both paintings and sculptures make sure your load will not be able to tip over during shipment or that some other load won’t crash into it in case of such event as a sudden turn.
