Shipping containers

Intermodal container is often made of metal and usually used for shipping unitized cargo. Usually this stands for load that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or cases. Sometimes package freight is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping granular materials and liquid goods as well as cargo that require special conditions while being shipped (e. g. heating).

Construction of an intermodal container is very resistant, which makes it possible to use it many times without the danger of damaging the intermodal container. All the shipping containers come with needed tools which allows transport companies to secure it for the transport as well as to move it securely between destinations. The equipment makes packing and unpacking shipping containers much more effortless.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, mainly between continents. Shipping containers don’t only enable the items to be quickly loaded, but also allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 meters. This type of container is often called a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around 10 pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk goods.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to move big cargo with unusual shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible walls.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers and many more.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Price of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being transported in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and possible extra work that the transport provider will have to perform in order to deliver the cargo (for example: help with loading and unloading).
