Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and frequently used for transporting package cargo. Normally that stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Occasionally unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for shipping granular materials as well as liquid cargo and also cargo that need specific conditions during transport (for example heating).

Structure of a shipping container is very strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the risk of fracturing the shipping container. Every intermodal container comes with specific tools which enables transport providers to fasten it during transport and also to transport it securely between destinations. The accessories make packing as well as unpacking intermodal containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are particulary popular in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers don’t only enable the items to be conveniently unloaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship around 10 pallets. These containers are often used to ship packed cargo.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is usually used to transport bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship big cargo with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers as well as many more.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Price of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as possible additional work that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: help with loading and unloading).
