Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and mostly used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally this stands for load that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Sometimes package freight is shipped on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting bulk goods and liquid goods as well as loads that require specific conditions while being transported (for example heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is pretty strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the danger of damaging the container. All the intermodal containers come with professional equipment which enables transport providers to fasten it during transport and also to move it safely between locations. The equipment makes loading as well as unloading intermodal containers much more effortless.

Shipping containers are particulary common in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport items from all over the world, primarily between continents. Shipping containers do not only allow the loads to be easily unloaded, but additionally enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually done by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship around 10 pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is often used to transport bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to ship large loads with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) used for transporting loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers and many others.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Cost of transporting a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality and potential additional tasks that the transport provider will need to perform in order to deliver the cargo (for example: help with loading and unloading).
