Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and mostly used for shipping package freight. Usually that stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or cases. Occasionally package freight is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid loads and also loads that require specific conditions while being transported (e. g. heating).

Structure of a shipping container is very resistant, which allows to use it numerous times with no danger of breaking the shipping container. Every shipping container comes with specific accessories which enables transport providers to fasten it for the shipment and also to move it securely between places. The accessories make packing as well as unloading shipping containers much easier.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to ship goods from all over the world, primarily from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t only enable the goods to be easily unloaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by trucks.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This kind of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship about ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is usually used to ship bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport large cargo with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers and many others.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Cost of transporting an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of load that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as probable extra tasks that the transport provider will have to perform in order to deliver the cargo ( like help with loading and unloading).
