Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and usually used for transporting unitized cargo. Usually this stands for cargo that is packed in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Occasionally package freight is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping granular materials as well as liquid cargo and also cargo that require special conditions while being transported (for example cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is very tough, which allows to use it many times without the danger of fracturing the intermodal container. Every shipping container comes with professional accessories which allows transport providers to fasten it during shipment as well as to transport it safely between places. The tools make loading and unloading shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are particulary used in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t just allow the goods to be quickly unloaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually done by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is often called a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about ten pallets. They are often used to ship packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is often used to ship bulk goods.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to transport large loads with unusual shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Cost of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality and possible additional tasks that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: help with loading and unloading).
