Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and usually used for transporting unitized cargo. Usually that means load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or cases. Sometimes package cargo is shipped on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping bulk goods as well as liquid loads and also cargo that need certain conditions during transport (e. g. heating).

Structure of a shipping container is very durable, which allows to use it many times with no danger of fracturing the container. All the intermodal containers come with special accessories which allows transport providers to secure it during shipment as well as to move it safely between locations. The accessories make loading as well as unpacking shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially used in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers don’t only enable the items to be conveniently loaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by trucks.

Types of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about 10 pallets. These containers are usually used to ship packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is often used to transport bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport big cargo with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers as well as many more.

Cost of intermodal container shipping

Price of shipping an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as probable extra tasks that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job ( like help with loading and unloading).
