Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and commonly used for shipping package freight. Usually that stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or boxes. At times package cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid loads as well as cargo that require certain conditions during transport (like cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly resistant, which allows to use it numerous times with no danger of fracturing the shipping container. Every shipping container comes with professional tools which allows transport providers to fasten it for the transport and also to transport it safely between destinations. The equipment makes loading and unpacking intermodal containers much more effortless.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to ship items from all over the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not only enable the goods to be quickly unloaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about 10 pallets. They are mostly used to ship packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to ship bulk cargo.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to ship big cargo with atypical shapes and dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers as well as many others.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Price of shipping an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as possible extra work that the transport provider will need to perform in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
