Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and commonly used for transporting package cargo. Normally this stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or cases. Occasionally unitized cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping granular materials as well as liquid loads as well as loads that need special conditions during shipment (like cooling).

Structure of an intermodal container is vastly strong, which allows to use it numerous times without the risk of breaking the intermodal container. All the shipping containers come with professional equipment which allows transport companies to secure it during shipment and also to move it securely between locations. The accessories make loading and unloading shipping containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are especially used in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport goods from all over the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t only allow the items to be conveniently loaded, but also allow the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is commonly provided by lorries.

Types of shipping containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about 10 pallets. They are usually used to ship packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to ship bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to ship large cargo with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers and many others.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Price of transporting a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as possible additional tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
