Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and usually used for shipping package cargo. Usually this stands for load that is packed in smaller containers, bags or cases. At times package freight is transported on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping granular materials as well as liquid goods as well as loads that require certain conditions while being transported (for example heating).

Construction of a shipping container is pretty durable, which allows to use it numerous times with no danger of damaging the intermodal container. Every shipping container comes with special accessories which allows transport companies to secure it for the shipment and also to ship it securely between locations. The accessories make packing as well as unloading intermodal containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are particulary used in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t only enable the goods to be easily unloaded, but also allow the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually done by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most popular intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport about 10 pallets. These containers are mostly used to ship packed cargo.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is usually used to ship bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to ship big cargo with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has collapsible walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers and many more.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Cost of shipping an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of load that is being transported in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as possible additional work that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
