Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and generally used for transporting package cargo. Normally this stands for load that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or boxes. Sometimes unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping bulk goods and liquid loads as well as loads that need special conditions during shipment (e. g. heating).

Structure of a shipping container is vastly resistant, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the risk of damaging the intermodal container. All the shipping containers come with needed equipment which allows transport providers to secure it during shipment and also to move it safely between destinations. The tools make loading as well as unpacking intermodal containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are particulary used in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to transport goods from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not just allow the items to be easily unloaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually provided by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport about 10 pallets. They are usually used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to transport bulk goods.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to ship large cargo with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), ventilated containers as well as many others.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Cost of shipping a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as possible additional work that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job ( like assistance with loading and unloading).
