Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and generally used for shipping package cargo. Normally this means load that is packed in smaller packages, bags or cases. Sometimes unitized cargo is transported on pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for shipping granular materials and liquid cargo as well as loads that require specific conditions during shipment (e. g. cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is pretty durable, which allows to use it numerous times without the risk of breaking the shipping container. Every shipping container comes with professional equipment which allows transport companies to fasten it for the transport as well as to move it securely between destinations. The accessories make loading and unpacking shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to transport goods from all over the world, primarily between continents. Shipping containers do not only allow the goods to be conveniently loaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually provided by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport around ten pallets. They are usually used to ship packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport big loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), ventilated containers and many more.

Cost of shipping container transport

Cost of transporting a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and probable additional work that the transport provider will need to perform in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
