Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and mostly used for shipping unitized cargo. Normally that means load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or cases. Occasionally package freight is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid goods as well as loads that require special conditions during transport (like cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is pretty durable, which allows to use it numerous times with no danger of damaging the shipping container. All the shipping containers come with specific equipment which allows transport providers to secure it for the shipment and also to move it securely between locations. The tools make loading and unloading shipping containers much easier.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport items from distant parts of the world, primarily between continents. Shipping containers don’t only enable the items to be quickly unloaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually provided by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 m. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about 10 pallets. They are mostly used to ship packed cargo.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to ship bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to transport big loads with unusual shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) for goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Price of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as probable additional tasks that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: help with loading and unloading).
