Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and mostly used for shipping package freight. Normally this stands for load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or cases. Occasionally package cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid loads and also loads that require specific conditions during transport (like heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is pretty resistant, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the risk of breaking the shipping container. All the intermodal containers come with special accessories which enables transport providers to secure it for the shipment and also to transport it safely between places. The accessories make packing and unpacking shipping containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are often used to transport goods from all over the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t only enable the goods to be handily unloaded, but also allow the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship around ten pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed cargo.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to ship bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship large cargo with unusual shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers and many others.

Prices of shipping container transport

Price of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as probable extra work that the transport provider will have to perform in order to finish the job (for example: help with loading and unloading).
