Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and usually used for transporting package cargo. Normally this stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or cases. Sometimes unitized cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for transporting granular materials and liquid loads and also cargo that need special conditions during shipment (e. g. heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is very strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no danger of damaging the intermodal container. All the shipping containers come with specific accessories which allows transport providers to fasten it for the shipment as well as to transport it securely between places. The tools make loading and unpacking intermodal containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are especially used in maritime transport. Container ships are often used to transport items from distant parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t only enable the loads to be conveniently loaded, but additionally enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around ten pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to ship bulk goods.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport large cargo with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers as well as many others.

Cost of shipping container transport

Price of shipping an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of load that is being transported in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality and potential extra tasks that the transport provider will need to complete in order to finish the job ( like help with loading and unloading).
