Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and commonly used for shipping package freight. Normally that means load that is packed in smaller packages, bags or cases. At times package freight is transported on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping granular materials and liquid loads and also loads that need specific conditions during shipment (e. g. heating).

Construction of a shipping container is very strong, which allows to use it many times without the danger of breaking the shipping container. Every intermodal container comes with professional tools which allows transport companies to secure it during shipment as well as to transport it safely between destinations. The tools make loading as well as unpacking shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are particulary used in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to ship goods from all over the world, primarily between continents. Shipping containers don’t only enable the items to be handily unloaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually provided by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 meters. This type of container is often called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport around ten pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to ship bulk goods.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to move big loads with atypical shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers and many more.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Price of shipping a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being transported in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as potential extra work that the transport provider will have to perform in order to deliver the cargo ( like help with loading and unloading).
