Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and generally used for shipping package freight. Usually that means load that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or cases. Sometimes unitized cargo is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for shipping bulk goods and liquid cargo and also loads that need specific conditions during transport (for example cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is pretty strong, which makes it possible to use it many times with no danger of fracturing the shipping container. All the shipping containers come with specific tools which enables transport companies to fasten it for the transport and also to move it safely between destinations. The equipment makes loading as well as unpacking intermodal containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from distant parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not just enable the goods to be handily loaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around 10 pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is usually used to transport bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship big cargo with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers and many others.

Prices of shipping container transport

Price of transporting an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as probable extra tasks that the transport provider will have to perform in order to finish the job (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
