Transporting a caravan

Shipping a caravan is usually associated with great deal of problems, but actually it is much easier than it seems. If you want to transport a caravan by yourself, do not forget to check if your driving license enables you to do it.

Kinds of caravans

1) Conventional caravan – as the name suggests, this is the most common type of caravan. It has four sturdy walls as well as a full height rood. A conventional caravan can differ in length and in the number of rooms, but generally it ensures quite comfortable travelling environment. Conventional caravans come in one or two axles.

B Tent trailer – this type of caravan is a good alternative in case you might want to lower the costs. Tent trailer may be towed by most of the cars and often includes the most basic equipment, such as hot water or a fridge. Tent trailer provide you considerable living space however offers very little wind resistance.

3) Pop-top caravans -  this type is similar to conventional caravans with the exception of a lifting roof, that can expand the living space. Pop-top caravans, similar to a tent trailer does not offer much wind resistance.

4) Pop-out caravans – this kind of caravan has all the features of a pop-top caravan and additional expandable area on the ends of the van, which creates a convienient spot to fit additional beds, should you need them. Pop-out caravans are the most popular among large families.

E Camper trailers – this type of caravan offers not as much living space as most of the types mentioned before, but thanks to having all the basic equipment (shower, fridge and so on) it is a convenient and affordable manner of travelling.

F The fifth-wheeler – this is the largest type of caravan. It offers considerable amount of living space, which allows whole families to travel comfortably. Because of its considerable size,  the fifth-wheeler requires a larger vehicle to tow it (for example a pickup truck).

Sometimes it is impossible to ship a caravan by yourself – it depends on whether you have right amount of time to cover required distance and whether the caravan itself is capable of covering the distance.

If you want to hire a transport company to move your caravan, make sure you give them the precise dimensions of the caravan. Also make sure that its insurance hasn’t expired. Futhermore, instruct the transport provider about state of the caravan – e.g. whether brakes work properly.

When relying on a transport provider to move your caravan you do not have to think about your driving license or crossing the borders  - all the procedures apply to the transport provider. Moreover, transport providers often invest in product liability insurance, which ensures you a compensation, should anything happens with the caravan during shipment.

Cost of moving a caravan

Cost of shipping a caravan hinges on its dimensions and weight (as it is with almost every type of cargo}. Additionally, the cost is also defined by the condition of the vehicle – if it is undamaged, you are likely to get cheaper price.
