Transporting a caravan

Transporting a caravan is frequently correlated with a lot of problems, but actually it is much less complex than it seems. If you want to ship a caravan on your own, remember to check if your driving license enables you to do it.

Types of caravans

A Conventional caravan – as the name suggests, this is the most common type of caravan. This type has four strong walls and a full height rood. Mentioned type might vary in dimensions as well as in the amount of rooms, however generally it ensures quite pleasant travelling conditions. Conventional caravans come in one or 2 axles.

2) Tent trailer – this type of caravan is a fine choice in case you need to lower the costs. It can be towed by almost any car and often contains the most basic equipment, like hot water or a fridge. Tent trailer provide you large amount of living space however offers very little wind resistance.

3) Pop-top caravans -  they are very much alike conventional caravans with the addition of a expendable roof, which can expand the living space. Pop-top caravans, similar to a tent trailer provides very little wind resistance.

4) Pop-out caravans – this type of caravan has all the features of a pop-top caravan and added expandable section on the foot and the head of the vehicle, which is a convienient area to place additional beds, should you are in need of them. Pop-out caravans are especially favored by big families.

5) Camper trailers – this type of caravan offers not as much living space as most of the types mentioned above, but because of the most needed basic equipment (shower, fridge and so on) camper trailers are considered to be a convenient as well as affordable way of travelling.

6) The fifth-wheeler – this is the biggest type of caravan. It provides with very big amount of living space, so that whole families can travel in comfort. Due to its large size,  the fifth-wheeler requires a larger vehicle to tow it (for example a pickup truck).

It is not always possible to transport a caravan on your own – it depends on whether you have right amount of time to drive required distance and whether the caravan itself is capable of travelling such distance.

In case you decide to hire a transport provider to move your caravan, check if you give them the specific dimensions of the caravan. Additionally make sure that its insurance is up-to-date. Moreover, instruct the transport provider about condition of the caravan – for example whether brakes work properly.

When hiring a transport provider to transport your caravan you don’t need to worry about your driving license or crossing the borders  - all the rules concern the transport provider. Furthermore, shipping providers often have product liability insurance, which will ensure you a compensation, should any damage is done to the caravan on the road.

Price of transporting a caravan

Price of moving a caravan depends on its dimensions and weight (as it is withmost types of cargo}. Other than that , the cost is also defined by the state of the caravan – if it is able to drive on its own, you are likely to get cheaper price.
