Art transportation

Art transportation can be tricky and therefore should be thought through cautiously before any preparations are made. For one, every field of art (sometimes every piece) requires its own ways of preparing for shipment. The art section is very diverse, you will find there a wide array of things from drawings or engravings to sculptures, art installations and much more.

Art is usually really breakable and can be easily damaged. What’s more many art pieces are unconventional in shape and size, therefore transporting it by courier is not an option. Finaly art is an expensive cargo, so it’s crucial to choose a professional hauler and the best way of securing the art for transportation. That again exclude post office as well as most couriers – services where you cannot speak to the person who is going to be the one transporting your cargo.

Art is considered to be delicate load. You must put ”fragile” sign on the package, to make sure that the transport provider is especially gentle while transporting it. While securing an art piece for transportation you will encounter a problem of packing the cargo. When you buy something in a store you get an original box which in the future you can use to for transportation (for example that goes for household appliances). But when it comes to art there is no original box – you need to take care of it on your own.

How to choose the safest way to secure art for shipment? It varies depending on what piece of art you wish to transport. When it comes to sculptures or pottery it’s important to select a box that will be able to fit it. The cardbard cannot be much bigger than the load – any empty space left between the box and the art can lead to damaging the load during transportation. If the shipped art piece have any removable elements, you should make sure to ship them separately. Wrap every part of the art in bubble wrap and gently place it in the box. If there is any space left between the load and the cardboard, fill it with some bubble wrap or Styrofoam. Remember to place a ”delicate” sign on the top as well as on the side of the box.

Securing a painting to be shipped will look a little different. You can buy special boxes for painting transportation – if you have one of those, your painting will be secured during transportation – if you remember to fill the empty space with some cloths and Styrofoam to absorb any vibrations on the road. If you don’t have a box like that, you may transport a painting without it, wrapped in bubble wrap and stretch foil. As long as you remember that the bubble foil and stretch foil cannot be in contact with the painted side of your load. To ensure that won’t happen wrap the painting in some soft material (a piece of cotton fabric or even a bed sheet) prior to wrapping it in bubble wrap.

As for placing the load in a car, a painting should be transported upward. With every piece of art make sure that the cargo will not be able to tip over during shipment or that nothing will bump into it in case of such event as a sudden turn.
