Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and frequently used for shipping package freight. Normally that means load that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or cases. Occasionally package freight is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping bulk goods as well as liquid loads as well as loads that require certain conditions while being shipped (like heating).

Structure of a shipping container is very strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the risk of fracturing the container. All the intermodal containers come with needed equipment which enables transport providers to fasten it for the transport as well as to move it securely between places. The accessories make loading and unpacking intermodal containers much easier.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to ship items from far-off parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers don’t only allow the loads to be quickly unloaded, but also allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 m. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to ship bulk cargo.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to ship big cargo with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) for goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers and many more.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Price of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and possible extra work that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
