Art transportation

Art transportation is sometimes tricky and therefore have to be thought through carefully before first arrangements are made. For one, every field of art (sometimes every piece) needs different ways of securing for shipment. The art subsection is very differentiated, you will find there a huge variety of things from paintings and engravings to pottery, art installations and much more.

Art is almost always really fragile and therefore is prone to damages. What’s more many art pieces are unconventional in shape as well as size, therefore transporting it with help of a post office is out of the question. Finaly art is an expensive cargo, which makes it crucial to find a trustworthy hauler and the safest way of preparing the art for shipping. That again exclude post office as well as most couriers – services where you don’t get to speak to the person who is going to be directly responsible for shipping your cargo.

Art is considered to be delicate load. You have to remember to place such sign on the package, so that the transport provider is extra gentle when transporting it. When securing an art piece for transportation you will encounter an issue of packaging. When you buy something in a store you get an original box which in the future you can use to for transportation (for example that is often seen for electronics). However when it comes to art you don’t have any original packaging – you need to take care of it by yourself.

What is the best way to secure art for shipment? It varies depending on what piece of art you wish to transport. With sculptures and pottery the most important thing is to select a box that could fit it. The cardbard shouldn’t be too big – any empty space left between the cardboard and the art may lead to destroying the cargo during shipment. If the art piece you are transporting have any removable elements, you should make sure to ship them on their own. Enclose the whole piece in bubble wrap and gently place it in the box. If there is some empty space left between the load and the cardboard, fill it with more bubble wrap and Styrofoam. Don’t forget to put a ”delicate” sign both on the top as well as on the side of the cardboard.

Securing a painting to be shipped will look a little different. There are special boxes for shipping paintings – with such box your painting will be safe during shipment – just remember to fill the empty space with some cloths or Styrofoam to absorb any tremors during shipment. In case you don’t have such box, you can transport a painting without it, wrapped in bubble wrap and stretch foil. Just remember that the bubble foil and stretch foil shouldn’t come into contact with the painted side of the cargo. To ensure that won’t happen enclose the painting in some softer material (some cotton fabric like a bed sheet) before wrapping it in bubble wrap.

As for placing the load in a car, a painting must be transported upward. With both paintings and sculptures make sure that the cargo won’t fall over during shipment or that some other load won’t bump into it in case of for example a sudden turn.
