Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and commonly used for transporting package cargo. Usually this means cargo that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or cases. Sometimes package cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for shipping granular materials as well as liquid goods and also cargo that need specific conditions while being shipped (for example cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is vastly durable, which makes it possible to use it many times with no risk of fracturing the intermodal container. All the intermodal containers come with needed equipment which enables transport companies to secure it during transport and also to transport it safely between places. The accessories make loading as well as unpacking intermodal containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are particulary used in maritime shipping. Container ships are often used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers do not only enable the loads to be quickly loaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly done by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This type of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to ship packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is often used to transport bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to move large loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Price of transporting a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as probable extra tasks that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job ( like help with loading and unloading).
