If you are moving to your new house or changing the decor it is likely you’ll need furniture transportation. Whether it’s furniture you already posses or recently bought furniture straight from shop, furniture transportation is always a challenge. Of course it depends on what kind of furniture needs transportation for example chairs and night tables could fit inside your car, but a wardrobe or a dinner table could become an issue. When you have a van at your disposal, you can transport the furniture on your own, however if you don’t, you’ll need assistance from a transport provider. In search for a solid solution that will also be affordable, try using a transport marketplace, like Clicktrans.
Securing furniture for transportation
When you need to transport your furniture, there are a couple of steps you ought to follow, while preparing them for transportation. Firstly, don’t forget to remove all the contents from the furniture – even if things inside are few. Some jolts and vibrations are inevitable on the road and every extra item roaming uncontrollably inside your furniture might become a potential danger. Besides empty furniture will be easier to ship.
Dismantle every part that you can – if your furniture may be dismantled without damage and transported in parts, that’s the best way to ship it. A table in parts is also much easier to place inside of a van. The main downside of shipping furniture in pieces is that it takes some time and skill, as wrongly dismantled furniture can be difficult or downright impossible to reassemble in your new home. Also – it’s good to be very cautious with small parts (screws etc.). It’s best to ship them separately, e.g. in a Ziploc bag.
Some types of furniture (for example antiques) cannot be dismantled and must be shipped in one piece. How to ship them securely? The possibility that you will find a box suitable to fit a dinner table is not high, however you can still secure it for the time of transportation. When securing furniture for shipment bubble foil is essential. Wrap all the delicate places and all the corners in bubble wrap to prevent your cargo from breaking if some other load crashes into it on the road. If you don’t have bubble foil, you may also use cardboard to protect the corners.
When you’re transporting furniture with some particularly delicate parts (for example containing glass or delicate fabrics) you must be especially careful during shipment. When you can, you should transport them separately, enclosed in protective layers of cloth or bubble foil (every glass element should be shipped that way). If it’s a part of furniture that can’t be disassembled, enclose it in additional layers of bubble foil. And remember to tell the transport provider that he’s shipping delicate cargo.
Like we’ve mentioned before, usually you will require help with transporting furniture. While looking for a hauler it’s good to find out if he offers help with loading and unloading. Remember to specify the floor they should be taken from and the floor they must be transported to – and if there is an elevator the haulers can use.
If … your furniture is valuable (even if it’s just sentimental) you should consider finding a transport provider that has a carrier liability insurance. Hiring him will likely cost more, but should something happen to your furniture during shipment, you will be entitled to reimbursement.
Price of furniture transportation
Because furniture is a very diverse category, a cost of furniture shipment may be rather hard to predict. When estimating the price of shipment you have to take into consideration the route length, whether it’s a domestic or an international job, how big and how heavy the cargo is, whether the cargo is fragile etc. A proven way to lower the price of furniture transportation is to choose a hauler who will take your furniture as a partial load – thanks to partial loads you can pay considerably less for the transportation, keeping high quality of the service.
