Tips for preparing for transportation

Furniture transportation

If you are in the process of moving to a new house or changing the decor it’s possible you’ll look for furniture shipping at some point. Whether it’s your old furniture on removal or brand new furniture, furniture transportation is usually quite problematic. Of course it depends on what kind of furniture needs transportation – chairs as well as night tables could be transported inside your car, but a wardrobe or a kitchen table will likely be problematic to ship. When you posses a van, you can ship the load on your own, but in most cases you’ll need help from a transport provider. In search for a solid solution that won’t cost a fortune, try using a transport marketplace, like Clicktrans.

Preparing furniture for transportation

When you need to move your furniture, there are a couple of steps you have to follow, while securing them for shipment. Firstly, don’t forget to remove all the contents from the furniture – even if things inside seem light. Jolts and shocks are almost impossible to avoid on the road and every extra item roaming freely inside your furniture might become a potential danger. Not to mention that furniture without any content will be easier to load.

Dismantle every part that you can – if your furniture may be safely disassembled and shipped in parts, it will be the safest way to ship it. A bookcase in pieces is also much easier to place inside of a van. The major downside of shipping furniture in pieces is that it takes some time and skill, as wrongly dismantled furniture can be hard or downright impossible to put back together in your new home. Other than that – you must be very cautious when shipping all the really small pieces (screws etc.). It’s best to ship them separately, for example in a Ziploc bag.

There is furniture (especially antiques) that cannot be disassembled and have to be transported in one piece. What’s the best way to transport them safely? The possibility that you will find a cardboard big enough to fit a dinner table is rather small, however there are other ways to secure your cargo for the shipping. While securing furniture for transportation bubble wrap is essential. Enclose all the delicate places as well as every corner with bubble foil to save your load from damaging in case some other load crashes into it on the road. If you don’t have bubble foil, you can try using cardboard to secure the corners.

If your furniture has some extra delicate parts (for example containing glass or delicate fabrics) you must take extra care during shipment. If it’s possible, it’s best to transport them separately, wrapped in thick layer of cloth and bubble foil (all glass shelves should be shipped that way). If it cannot be disassembled, wrap it in additional layers of bubble wrap. Don’t forget to tell the transport provider that he will be transporting delicate load.

Like we’ve mentioned before, usually you will need help with transporting furniture. While choosing a transport provider it’s good to find out if he offers help with loading as well as unloading. Remember to mention the floor they should be taken from and the floor they must be transported to – as well as if there is an elevator available.
