Tips for preparing for transportation

Changing house is one of the most ordinary happenings we can come across in our days. And even though we move at least a few times in our lifetime, removals are still among the most stressful situations possible. Just figuring out the logistics of moving everything you have between houses is a very large task and when you add packing, unpacking as well as selecting the right hauler to help you with removal, it seems really colossal and very nerve-wracking. Fortunately there are couple of things you can do to make the move as simple as possible as well as significantly less nerve-wracking.

Packing and securing your items for transportation

The most important thing you need to remember while preparing for the removal is that you should create a precise list of steps that you will abide by during the move. It is best to create a list of all the things you want to transport. Such a list will not only help you pack but also will allow you to make sure that all of your things were successfully transported to your new home. Removal entails shipping a great deal of various items, among them a lot of little things that can be easily misplaced when packed in a hurry – a list will ensure that you will remember to make sure they all made it to the place of destination safely. The next important step is tagging all the cardboards as clearly as you can. One of the most common ways of labelling boxes is by category. So all the kitchen accessories as well as devices should be placed into boxes labelled ‘kitchen’, all the duvets and jewellery in the box tagged ‘bedroom’ etc. You’ll quickly find out how time-saving tagging can be once you get to the unpacking part. Remember to tag both sides and the top of the cardboard, so that you (and the hauler) will be able to recognize which box goes where, no matter how they will be stacked in the shipping vehicle.

Be extra careful when preparing to transport delicate goods. Enclose them in protective layers of textiles or bubble foil and label them in an easily visible place (together with a “This way up” sign). You should also make sure that the transport provider knows that he’ll be transporting delicate cargo and which boxes requires handling with caution.

When you are shipping furniture, it’s imperative to empty them prior to the removal and ship everything that was inside individually. Any loose items inside closets or drawers could damage your furniture during shipment. It’s also good to secure all the furniture doors and drawers using tape so that they cannot open during transportation. You may use ordinary Scotch tape to do that. Another issue is the matter of putting the furniture inside the shipping vehicle. Ahead of attempting to move your furniture out of the apartment, make sure that you’ll be able to transport them through the front doors, stairways and into the elevator (if your building has one). If they do, you can move them without disassembling (find at least 1 person to help you!). If they cannot, disassembling them is the sole way to move them without harm. Be cautious with that – make sure you store all the nails and bolts gathered for example in a Ziploc bag and that you’ve secured all the parts of the furniture sufficiently. Dismantling furniture is also convenient whenever you want to fill the shipping vehicle to the maximum, as disassembled furniture will be much easier to stack efficiently.

When securing minor items, such as books, kitchen appliances, cosmetics etc., boxes will be the smartest choice. It’s probable that you won’t have enough boxes to fit all your belongings – however there is a few ways to acquire some more. For example you may get new cardboards in all home-improvement and construction stores. But as you’ll most likely require lots of cardboards, you can choose a more economical method. Go to nearby stores and ask if they have some cardboards they no longer need. Stores usually possess a great amount of unneeded cardboards and most of the time they are willing to share.

An alternative to boxes would be using bags, especially for storing clothes and small stuff. There is a quite higher possibility that you will find the bags at home. As mentioned, bags will serve as an adequate choice when storing textiles, magazines as well as small things, there are some downsides, though. Bags are much more flimsy than cardboards as well as susceptible to tearing, should you decide to use them for transporting items with edges (for example books, cutlery and such). Also – stacking bags on top of each other is much more difficult than stacking boxes in similar fashion.

Among the most tricky loads to ship are houseplants. It’s obviously safest to move them individually, however if something prevents you from doing that, make sure that the transport provider is aware of what he is going to transport. One day before the shipment water the plants generously and let them sit. It’s crucial that the plants are watered enough to suffer through the transportation, but also to allow them to absorb what they can prior to putting them in a box (you need to pour off the extra water from the saucer, to make sure it won’t soak through the box).

Selecting the best hauler

Obviously, aside from suitably securing your cargo for the removal, it is also important to find a suitable hauler. What factors should you consider when selecting the right person? Price, obviously, is of importance, especially on lengthy, international routes, however that’s just 1 factor. Whenever shipping everything you have you should in the first place take into consideration if your cargo will be safe when given to the transport provider. Whenever listing your delivery on a transport marketplace, such as Clicktrans, you not only may ask possible transport providers all the questions you need answered before making your decision about a hauler but moreover you can check out feedback left by previous customers on each transport provider’s profile page. Nothing is more believable than reviews given by a person who’s already hired the transport provider you are considering.

The cost of removal

Price of removal is pretty hard to asses, as it varies considerably due to how much the cargo weights and how big it is or the route length. If you plan to ship many fragile things, the price is likely to be higher. The same goes for removals between countries – routes within one country are normally less pricey than shipping your things across borders.
