Tips for preparing for transportation

How to organize a removal?

Moving to a new house is among the most common situations we can experience in our days. And even though we move at least a few times in our lifetime, removals are still among the most nerve-wracking happenings possible. Just figuring out the logistics of moving all your belongings from one place to another is an enormous task and with securing your belongings for transportation, unpacking and selecting the best company to help you with the move, it becomes really huge and very nerve-wracking. Thankfully there are a few ways to make the move as simple as can be and significantly less stressful.

Packing and securing your belongings for the time of the removal

One crucial thing you need to remember while preparing for the removal is that you should create a coherent plan that you’ll have to stick to during the move. It is best to create an inventory of all the things you need to ship. It can not only make the packing easier but also will allow you to check if all your belongings were successfully shipped to its place of destination. Removal calls for shipping a big amount of various items, including a big amount of little items that are easily forgettable under the pressure of time – an inventory will help you check if they all made it to your new home safely. Another crucial step is tagging all the cardboards as clearly as you are able to. One of the most helpful ways of labelling boxes is by category. So all the kitchen accessories as well as devices should be placed into cardboards tagged ‘kitchen’, all the duvets as well as personal items in the box labelled ‘bedroom’ and so on. You’ll be surprised how much time labelling can save once you start the unpacking. Remember to label both sides and the top of the cardboard, to make sure that you (and the transport provider) can be sure which cardboard goes where, regardless of how they will be stacked in the transporting vehicle.

Take special care when preparing to transport fragile goods. Wrap them in protective layers of textiles or bubble foil and then label them clearly (together with a “This way up” sign). You also need to make sure that the transport provider is aware that he’ll be transporting delicate goods and which cardboards requires handling with care.

When you are shipping furniture, it’s imperative to take everything out of them prior to the removal as well as transport everything that was inside separately. Any loose things in cupboards or drawers could damage your furniture during transportation. It’s also smart to secure all the furniture doors and drawers with some tape so that they cannot open during shipment. You can use regular Scotch tape for that. Another issue is the matter of loading the furniture inside the transporting car. Ahead of attempting to move your furniture from the house, make sure that they will fit via front doors, stairways and into the elevator (if your old apartment has one). If so, you’ll be able to move them without dismantling (be sure to have at least 1 person to help you!). If they cannot, dismantling them is the only way to transport them without harm. Be cautious with dismantling – make sure you store all the nails as well as bolts gathered for example in a Ziploc bag and that you’ve secured delicate elements of the furniture sufficiently. Disassembling furniture is also convenient whenever you want to use the transporting vehicle to the maximum, as dismantled furniture will take a lot less place.

When packing smaller items, like books, kitchen appliances, decorations and so on, boxes will be th
