Transporting a caravan

Shipping a caravan is usually correlated with a lot of difficulties, but actually it is much less difficult than we realize. If you plan on shipping a caravan by yourself, don’t forget to check if your driving license allows you to do that.

Kinds of caravans

1) Conventional caravan – as can be deduced from the name, this is the most usual type of caravan. This type has four solid walls as well as a full height rood. It can differ in dimensions as well as in the amount of rooms, however in most cases it ensures pretty convenient travelling conditions. Conventional caravans may have one or 2 axles.

2) Tent trailer – this type of caravan is a great alternative in case you need to lower the costs. Tent trailer may be towed by almost any car , moreover it often contains most of the elementary equipment, like shower and a fridge. Tent trailer gives you large amount of living space however offers very little wind resistance.

3) Pop-top caravans -  they are very much alike conventional caravans with the addition of a expendable roof, that can expand the living space. Pop-top caravans, much like a tent trailer does not provide much wind resistance.

4) Pop-out caravans – this kind of caravan has all the advantages of a pop-top caravan as well as extra expandable section on the foot and the head of the vehicle, which creates a perfect area to fit additional beds, should you are in need of them. Pop-out caravans are especially favored by big families.

E Camper trailers – this type of caravan offers less living space than the types described above, but thanks to having the most needed basic equipment (shower, fridge and so on) camper trailers are considered to be a convenient as well as budget manner of travelling.

6) The fifth-wheeler – this is the biggest type of caravan. It provides with considerable amount of living space, so that whole families can travel comfortably. Due to its considerable size,  the fifth-wheeler requires a larger vehicle to tow it (e. g. a pickup truck).

It is not always possible to transport a caravan by yourself – it depends on whether you have enough time to drive necessary distance and whether the caravan itself is functional.

In case you want to hire a transport company to move your caravan, check if you give them the exact dimensions of the caravan. Also check if its insurance hasn’t expired. Futhermore, warn the hauler about condition of the caravan – e.g. whether lights are fully functional.

When relying on a transport provider to move your caravan you don’t have to think about your driving license or speed limits  - all the rules concern the transport provider. Furthermore, transport companies often have product liability insurance, which ensures you a compensation, should anything happens with the caravan on the road.

Cost of shipping a caravan

Cost of shipping a caravan hinges on its dimensions and weight (as it is with almost every type of loads}. Additionally, the price is also defined by the state of the vehicle – if it is able to drive on its own, you are likely to pay less.
