Transporting a caravan

Shipping a caravan is usually correlated with great deal of difficulties, but actually it is much less complex than it seems. If you plan on shipping a caravan by yourself, don’t forget to make sure that your driving license allows you to do that.

Types of caravans

A Conventional caravan – as can be deduced from the name, this is the most popular type of caravan. This type has four solid walls and a full height rood. Mentioned type might vary in length as well as in the number of rooms, yet generally it ensures pretty comfortable travelling environment. Conventional caravans come in one or 2 axles.

2) Tent trailer – this type of caravan is a great alternative in case you need to lower the costs. It can be towed by most of the cars and usually includes the most basic equipment, such as shower or a fridge. It provide you considerable amount of living space however offers much less wind resistance than a conventional caravan.

3) Pop-top caravans -  this kind is very much alike conventional caravans with the addition of a expendable roof, which can expand the living space. Pop-top caravans, much like a tent trailer does not provide much wind resistance.

D Pop-out caravans – this kind of caravan is equipped with all the advantages of a pop-top caravan and added pop-out area on the foot and the head of the van, which creates a perfect spot to fit extra beds, in case you are in need of them. Pop-out caravans are the most popular among large families.

5) Camper trailers – this type of caravan offers not as much living space as most of the types described above, but because they provide with all the elementary equipment (shower, hot water and so on) camper trailers are considered to be a comfortable and budget manner of travelling.

6) The fifth-wheeler – this is the largest kind of caravan. It offers very big amount of living space, which allows whole families to travel pleasantly. Because of its considerable size,  the fifth-wheeler requires a larger vehicle to tow it (e. g. a pickup truck).

Sometimes it is impossible to ship a caravan on your own – such decision depends on whether you have enough time to drive necessary route and whether the caravan itself is capable of travelling such distance.

If you choose to find a transport company to ship your caravan, double-check if you have the precise measurements of the caravan. Moreover check if its insurance hasn’t expired. In addition, warn the transport provider about state of the caravan – for example whether brakes work properly.

When relying on a transport provider to transport your caravan you do not need to worry about your driving license or crossing the borders  - all the requirements concern the transport provider. Furthermore, transport companies often have product liability insurance, which ensures you a compensation, if any damage is done to the caravan during transportation.

Price of shipping a caravan

Cost of shipping a caravan depends on its dimensions and weight (similar to almost every type of cargo}. Other than that , the cost is also defined by the condition of the vehicle – if it is able to drive on its own, you are likely to get cheaper price.
