Art transportation

Art transportation can be difficult and have to be planned cautiously before first preparations are made. For one, every branch of art (sometimes every piece) requires different ways of securing for transportation. The art category is really diverse, you will find there a wide collection of things from drawings and engravings to sculptures, art installations and much more.

Art is almost always really fragile and therefore can be easily damaged. Other than that most of the art pieces are atypical in shape and size, therefore shipping it via courier is not an option. And lastly art is a costly cargo, which makes it very important to choose a trustworthy transport provider and the safest way of securing the art for transportation. That again exclude post office and most couriers – companies where you cannot speak to the person who is going to be the one shipping your cargo.

Art is thought of as delicate load. You ought to put such sign on the box, to make sure that the hauler is especially careful when transporting it. While securing a piece of art for shipment you will encounter a problem of packing the cargo. When you buy something from a store you receive an original box that can be used for shipping the item in the future (for example that is often seen for household appliances). However when it comes to art there is no original box – you have to secure it by yourself.

What is the best way to pack art for transportation? It varies depending on what piece of art you wish to transport. When it comes to sculptures or pottery it is crucial to find a cardboard that will be able to fit it. The cardbard cannot be much bigger than the load – any empty space left between the box and the load can be the cause of damaging the cargo during shipment. If the shipped art piece have any removable elements, make sure to transport them separately. Enclose every part of the art in bubble wrap and carefully place it in the box. If there is some empty space left between the load and the cardboard, fill it with more bubble wrap or Styrofoam. Remember to put a “fragile” sign both on the top as well as on the side of the cardboard.

Preparing a painting to be shipped will look a little different. There are boxes dedicated for painting transportation – with such box your painting should be secured during transportation – if you don’t forget to fill the space that is left in the box with some fabric or Styrofoam to cushion any vibrations on the road. In case you don’t have such box, you can ship a painting without it, wrapped in bubble wrap and stretch foil. Just don’t forget that the bubble foil or stretch foil shouldn’t come into contact with the painted side of your load. To avoid that enclose the painting in some soft material (a piece of cotton fabric like a bed sheet) prior to wrapping it in bubble foil.

When it comes to placing the load in a transporting vehicle, a painting should be transported upward. With both paintings and sculptures make sure your load will not be able to fall over during transportation and that some other load won’t crash into it in case of for example a sudden turn.
