Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and mostly used for shipping unitized cargo. Normally this stands for load that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or cases. At times unitized cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping bulk goods as well as liquid cargo as well as loads that require certain conditions while being shipped (like heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is vastly strong, which allows to use it many times without the risk of damaging the intermodal container. All the shipping containers come with specific tools which enables transport companies to fasten it for the transport as well as to move it securely between destinations. The accessories make packing and unloading intermodal containers much easier.

Shipping containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t just allow the items to be conveniently unloaded, but also enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is commonly provided by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This type of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to transport bulk goods.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to transport big cargo with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Cost of shipping a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as possible extra work that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job ( like assistance with loading and unloading).
