Art transportation

Art transportation is sometimes difficult and should be thought through carefully before first preparations are made. Firstly, every field of art (sometimes every piece) needs different ways of securing for shipment. The art section is very diverse, you can find there a huge collection of things from drawings or engravings to sculptures, art installations and so on.

Art is usually very fragile and is prone to damages. Moreover most of the art pieces are unconventional in shape and dimensions, therefore shipping it by post office is out of the question. Finaly art is a costly load, so it’s crucial to select a professional transport provider and the best way of securing the art for transportation. That excludes post office and most couriers – services where you don’t get to speak to the person who will be directly responsible for transporting your cargo.

Art is what we consider fragile load. You must put such tag on the package, to make sure that the hauler is especially careful when transporting it. When preparing a piece of art for shipment there is a problem of packing the cargo. When you buy something from a store you receive an original box that can be used for shipping the item in the future (e.g. that is often seen for household appliances). But with art there is no original packaging – you need to take care of it by yourself.

What is the best way to secure art for transportation? It varies depending on what piece of art you want to ship. With sculptures or pottery it is crucial to choose a box that will be able to fit it. The cardbard shouldn’t be too big – any empty space left between the box and the art may lead to destroying the load during transportation. If the art piece you are transporting have any removable elements, remember to ship them separately. Enclose the whole piece in bubble wrap and carefully put it in the box. If there is any empty space left in the box, fill it with some bubble foil or Styrofoam. Don’t forget to put a “fragile” sticker both on the top and on the side of the cardboard.

Securing a painting for shipment will look a little different. You can buy special boxes for shipping paintings – with one of those, your painting should be secured during transportation – if you don’t forget to fill the empty space with some cloths and Styrofoam to cushion any tremors on the road. In case you don’t have a box like that, you can ship a painting without it, enclosed in bubble foil or stretch foil. As long as you remember that the bubble foil and stretch foil cannot be in contact with the painted side of your load. To ensure that won’t happen enclose the cargo in some soft material (a piece of cotton fabric like a bed sheet) prior to wrapping it in bubble wrap.

As for putting the load in a car, a painting must be transported upward. With both paintings and sculptures make sure that the cargo will not be able to fall over during transportation and that nothing will bump into it during such event as a sudden turn.
