Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and commonly used for transporting unitized cargo. Usually this stands for load that is packed in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Occasionally package cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping granular materials as well as liquid goods and also loads that require special conditions during transport (for example cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly strong, which makes it possible to use it many times without the danger of breaking the shipping container. All the intermodal containers come with specific tools which enables transport providers to fasten it during transport as well as to ship it securely between places. The equipment makes loading and unloading shipping containers much more effortless.

Shipping containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are often used to transport items from all over the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not only enable the items to be conveniently unloaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is usually done by trucks.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 m. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about ten pallets. They are usually used to ship packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to transport bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to transport big loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) for goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers and many more.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Cost of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality and possible extra tasks that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
