Shipping containers

Shipping container is usually made of metal and usually used for transporting package cargo. Usually that stands for load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or cases. Occasionally package cargo is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for shipping bulk goods and liquid loads as well as loads that require special conditions during shipment (for example cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is pretty resistant, which makes it possible to use it many times with no risk of damaging the container. Every shipping container comes with special tools which allows transport providers to secure it during transport as well as to transport it securely between locations. The equipment makes packing and unloading shipping containers much easier.

Shipping containers are especially used in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to ship goods from all over the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers don’t only allow the goods to be easily loaded, but also enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is commonly provided by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most popular intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport around ten pallets. They are mostly used to ship packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to regular 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to move large loads with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers as well as many others.

Cost of intermodal container shipping

Cost of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and possible additional work that the transport provider will have to perform in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
