Shipping containers

Intermodal container is often made of metal and generally used for transporting package cargo. Normally this stands for load that is packed in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Sometimes unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping granular materials and liquid cargo and also cargo that require specific conditions while being transported (like heating).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the danger of damaging the shipping container. All the intermodal containers come with special tools which enables transport companies to fasten it for the shipment as well as to move it securely between locations. The accessories make packing and unloading intermodal containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are particulary popular in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport goods from distant parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not just enable the loads to be quickly loaded, but also enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually done by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about 10 pallets. These containers are often used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is often used to ship bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship large loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable sides.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers as well as many others.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Cost of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality and potential extra tasks that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo ( like assistance with loading and unloading).
