Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and generally used for shipping package freight. Usually this means load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or cases. Occasionally unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping bulk goods and liquid cargo as well as loads that need certain conditions while being shipped (like cooling).

Structure of an intermodal container is vastly durable, which makes it possible to use it many times with no risk of damaging the container. All the shipping containers come with special tools which enables transport providers to secure it during shipment as well as to ship it securely between destinations. The equipment makes packing as well as unpacking shipping containers much easier.

Shipping containers are particulary used in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport goods from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers do not just enable the loads to be conveniently loaded, but also allow the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about ten pallets. They are often used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is often used to ship bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to ship large loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has collapsible walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers and many more.

Cost of intermodal container shipping

Cost of shipping an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality and probable additional work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo ( like help with loading and unloading).
