Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and usually used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally that means cargo that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or boxes. At times package cargo is shipped on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting granular materials and liquid goods as well as cargo that need certain conditions during transport (e. g. heating).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty resistant, which allows to use it numerous times without the risk of damaging the container. Every intermodal container comes with professional tools which allows transport providers to fasten it during shipment and also to ship it securely between locations. The equipment makes packing and unloading shipping containers much easier.

Shipping containers are particulary common in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers don’t only enable the items to be quickly unloaded, but additionally enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 m. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport about 10 pallets. These containers are often used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to ship large loads with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), ventilated containers and many others.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Price of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and probable extra work that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
