Art transportation

Art transportation can be tricky and therefore ought to be planned cautiously before any arrangements are made. First of all, every branch of art (in some cases every piece) needs different ways of preparing for shipment. The art section is very differentiated, you can find there a big array of things from drawings or engravings to pottery, art installations and so on.

Art is almost always very breakable and therefore is prone to damages. What’s more many art pieces are atypical in shape as well as dimensions, so shipping it by courier is not an option. Finaly art is an expensive load, which makes it crucial to choose a professional transport provider and the best way of preparing the art for transportation. That again exclude post office and most couriers – services where you cannot work out the details of the transportation with the person who will be directly responsible for shipping your load.

Art is considered to be fragile load. You ought to put ”fragile” sign on the box, to make sure that the hauler know to be especially careful when shipping it. When preparing a piece of art for shipment there is a problem of packing the cargo. With items bought in a store you get an original box which in the future you can use to for transportation (for example that is often seen for household appliances). But with art there is no original packaging – you have to take care of it by yourself.

What is the safest way to pack art for transportation? It depends on a piece you want to transport. With sculptures or pottery it’s important to find a cardboard that will be able to fit it. The box shouldn’t be too big – any room left between the box and the art may lead to destroying the art during transportation. If the art piece you are transporting have any elements that can be removed, remember to transport them on their own. Enclose the whole piece in bubble foil and gently place the cargo in the cardboard. If there is any empty space left in the box, fill it with some bubble wrap and Styrofoam. Don’t forget to put a “fragile” sticker both on the top as well as on the side of the cardboard.

Securing a painting to be shipped will look a little different. There are special boxes for shipping paintings – if you have one of those, your painting should be secured during transportation – if you don’t forget to fill the space that is left in the box with some cloths and Styrofoam to absorb any tremors on the road. If you do not possess such box, you may transport a painting without a box, enclosed in bubble foil or stretch foil. Just don’t forget that the bubble foil or stretch foil shouldn’t be in contact with the painted side of your load. To avoid that wrap the painting in some soft material (a piece of cotton fabric like a bed sheet) before enclosing it in bubble wrap.

As for placing the load in a transporting vehicle, a painting must be transported vertically. With every piece of art make sure that the cargo will not be able to tip over during transportation and that nothing will bump into it during such event as a sudden turn.
