Art transportation

Art shipping can be tricky and should be thought through cautiously before any preparations are made. First of all, every branch of art (in some cases every piece) needs its own ways of securing for shipment. The art category is really varied, you will find there a huge variety of items from drawings and engravings to sculptures, art installations and much more.

Art is almost always very fragile and is prone to damages. Other than that most of the art pieces are atypical in shape as well as dimensions, so shipping it via post office is not an option. Finaly art is an expensive cargo, which makes it very important to find a trustworthy transport provider and the safest way of preparing the art for transportation. That again exclude post office as well as most couriers – companies where you cannot work out the details of the transportation with the person who will be directly responsible for transporting your cargo.

Art is thought of as delicate load. You have to remember to place such sign on the package, so that the transport provider is extra gentle while transporting it. When preparing an art piece for shipment there is an issue of packing the cargo. With items bought from a store you get a package that can be used for shipping the item in the future (e.g. that goes for electronics). However with art you don’t have any original packaging – you need to take care of it on your own.

How to choose the best way to secure art for transportation? It varies depending on what piece you wish to ship. With sculptures or pottery it is crucial to find a cardboard that will be able to fit it. The cardbard shouldn’t be too big – any room left between the box and the load may lead to destroying the load during shipment. If the art piece you are transporting have any elements that can be removed, make sure to transport them separately. Wrap the whole piece in bubble wrap and carefully place it in the box. If there is some space left between the load and the cardboard, fill it with more bubble wrap and pieces of cloth. Remember to put a ”delicate” sign both on the top and on the side of the box.

Securing a painting for transportation will look a little different. There are boxes dedicated for transporting paintings – if you have such box your painting should be safe during transportation – just remember to fill the empty space with some cloths and Styrofoam to cushion any vibrations on the road. In case you do not possess such box, you may transport a painting without it, wrapped in bubble wrap or stretch foil. Just remember that the bubble foil and stretch foil shouldn’t come into contact with the painted side of your load. To ensure that won’t happen wrap the cargo in some softer material (a piece of cotton fabric or even a bed sheet) before wrapping it in bubble foil.

When it comes to placing the load in a car, a painting must be shipped vertically. With both paintings and sculptures make sure that the cargo won’t tip over during shipment and that nothing will crash into it in case of such event as a sudden turn.
