Art transportation

Art shipping can be difficult and ought to be planned cautiously before first arrangements are made. Firstly, every branch of art (in some cases every piece) needs its own ways of preparing for shipment. The art category is really differentiated, you can find there a wide array of things from drawings or engravings to sculptures, art installations and much more.

Art is almost always really fragile and can be easily damaged. Moreover most of the art pieces are atypical in shape as well as dimensions, so shipping it via courier is out of the question. Finaly art is a costly load, so it’s crucial to select a professional transport provider and the best way of securing the art for shipping. That excludes post office as well as most couriers – services where you don’t get to speak to the person who is going to be the one transporting your load.

Art is what we consider fragile load. You ought to remember to place ”fragile” sign on the package, so that the transport provider is extra gentle while transporting it. While securing an art piece for shipment there is a problem of packaging. With items bought in a store you get a package that can be used for shipping the item in the future (for example that goes for electronics). But with art you don’t have any original packaging – you have to take care of it on your own.

What is the best way to secure art for shipment? It depends on a piece of art you wish to ship. With sculptures or pottery the most important thing is to choose a cardboard that will be able to fit it. The cardbard cannot be much bigger than the load – any empty space left between the cardboard and the load can lead to destroying the cargo during transportation. If the art piece you are transporting have any elements that can be removed, remember to ship them on their own. Enclose the whole piece in bubble wrap and gently put the cargo in the cardboard. If there is some space left in the box, fill it with more bubble foil and Styrofoam. Don’t forget to place a ”delicate” sticker both on the top as well as on the side of the box.

Preparing a painting for transportation will require a different approach. There are special boxes for painting transportation – with such box your painting should be secured during transportation – just don’t forget to fill the empty space with some cloths or Styrofoam to absorb any tremors during shipment. In case you do not possess a box like that, you may transport a painting without it, wrapped in bubble wrap or stretch foil. Just don’t forget that the bubble wrap and stretch foil shouldn’t touch the painted side of your load. To avoid that wrap the cargo in some soft material (a piece of cotton fabric or even a bed sheet) before enclosing it in bubble wrap.

When it comes to placing the load in a shipping vehicle, a painting must be transported upward. With every piece of art make sure that the cargo won’t fall over during transportation or that nothing will bump into it during for example a sudden turn.
