Shipping containers

Shipping container is usually made of metal and commonly used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally this stands for load that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or boxes. Sometimes package freight is shipped on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting granular materials and liquid loads and also loads that need certain conditions while being transported (for example heating).

Construction of a shipping container is pretty strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no danger of fracturing the shipping container. All the shipping containers come with professional tools which enables transport providers to secure it for the shipment and also to move it safely between places. The tools make loading as well as unloading shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport items from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not only enable the loads to be conveniently unloaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most popular intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 meters. This type of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship about ten pallets. They are usually used to transport packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is often used to ship bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to move big loads with unusual shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers and many more.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Price of transporting an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of load that is being transported in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as potential extra tasks that the transport provider will need to perform in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
